Matt and I are teaching the preteens in our Church. Or, I should say, Matt is teaching and I am crowd/interruption control and explaining what the kids don't understand when Matt teaches it. I have to say it has been a very interesting experience.
Today, we were talking about Genesis, a pretty broad overview. One of the questions was "What did Abraham and Sarah name their miracle baby?" Well, first we had to discuss why it was a miracle that Sarah had a baby (her old age). One of the boys said "Wouldn't the baby have come out all wrinkled and stuff??" He sounded pretty disgusted that a lady that old would have a baby. I couldn't help it, I laughed and laughed. I said "Well, most babies come out wrinkled, look at your baby pictures, but it didn't come out all wrinkled and with gray hair." He laughed too and then him and another boy said "If she was that old then he should have come out like a 35 year old boy."
I love working with kids. I love that they have no censor and feel free to say exactly what they think. (I can relate as half the time I seem to leave my censor at home) I love the curiosity at this age. These kids have a lot of really good questions. It really makes you feel inadequate to teach them, but I love that they are asking questions. It means they are engaged, curious and eager to learn. This is a bit of a rowdy bunch, mostly boys (a lot of time Kayla is the only girl), but they are a great group of kids. They certainly keep us on our toes. I doubt we will have many dull moments with these kiddos.
