Hope Between the Pages

Hope Between the Pages

 Title: Hope Between the Pages

Author: Pepper Basham

Publisher: Barbour Publishing

Genre: Historical Fiction

Publication date: April 1, 2021

Synopsis:

Uncover the Story Behind a One-Hundred-Year-Old Love Letter

Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure.

Clara Blackwell helps her mother manage a struggling one-hundred-year old family bookshop in Asheville, North Carolina, but the discovery of a forgotten letter opens a mystery of a long-lost romance and undiscovered inheritance which could save its future. Forced to step outside of her predictable world, Clara embarks on an adventure with only the name Oliver as a hint of the man’s identity in her great-great-grandmother’s letter. From the nearby grand estate of the Vanderbilts, to a hamlet in Derbyshire, England, Clara seeks to uncover truth about family and love that may lead to her own unexpected romance.

My Review:

Literary genius. Highly romantic. Engaging. Heart-wrenching. Sweet.

This is only the second book that I have read by Pepper Basham and it is a completely different genre from the first one I have read, but it makes me want to grab a copy of all her books, lock myself away, and not come out until I have finished reading them all.

This book is incredible. I was drawn into the story from the first line, "Any story that begins with a library is bound to be an excellent tale," and captivated until the last line (not sharing, no spoilers, read it to find out!). There is so much depth to this story. It is a dual time slip, with Sadie's story beginning in 1915, and Clara's story is present day.

Sadie is a book maid at the Biltmore House and works for the Vanderbilts. She took over this position when her mother passed away. Sadie loves books and loves her job. She has no intention to ever leave her job or fall in love. She meets Oliver, a man above her station, who lives an ocean away. Is there any hope that these two bookish fans will find their happily ever after?

Clara helps care for her mother and works at their family bookshop, Blackwell's. But her vengeful uncle threatens everything they have known and loved. This sends Clara across the ocean in search of answers and truth. She meets Max as she searches through the Camden house for answers. Another man, another ocean, another couple with a love of books. What in the world? Will the distance be insurmountable or will love conquer all?!

There are many quotable lines in this novel and references to other books and shows. One quote I particularly loved was, "Books breathed to me." I also loved the reference to Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert!

Hope Between the Pages has a bit of everything and I loved every part of it. It is extremely well written, engaging, with likable characters. It has bookish characters, a bit of mystery, an understated tender romance, picturesque scenes, several twists and turns, and an undeniable element of faith. I simply cannot say enough good things about this book. It is definitely one of my new all-time favorites!

This was indeed an "excellent tale." I loved everything about it. I read this in eBook format but I want to own a copy of this book. I am not one to highlight in fiction, or reread books, but I want to read this one again (even though I just finished it!) and highlight all those amazing quotes ("God allows us the gift of memories to tide us over to eternity.")! I would recommend this literary excellence to anyone who loves books!!! It is not to be missed. I would also recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction and deeply poignant romance novels.

Thank you to Net Galley and Barbour Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review but am more than happy to do so. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Menopause Manifesto

Title: The Menopause Manifesto: Own Your Health with Facts and Feminism

The Menopause Manifesto: Own Your Health with Facts and Feminism

 Author: Dr. Jen Gunter

Publisher: Kensington Books

Genre: Nonfiction/Health

Publication date: May 25, 2021

Synopsis

The internationally renowned, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Vagina Bible, Dr. Jen Gunter has been called the world's most famous--and outspoken--gynecologist (The Guardian), the Internet's OB/GYN, and one of the fiercest advocates for women's health. Now, in The Menopause Manifesto, Dr. Jen Gunter brings you empowerment through knowledge by countering stubborn myths and misunderstandings about menopause with hard facts, real science, fascinating historical perspective, and expert advice.

The only thing predictable about menopause is its unpredictability. Factor in widespread misinformation, a lack of research, and the culture of shame around women's bodies, and it's no wonder women are unsure what to expect during the menopause transition and beyond.

Menopause is not a disease--it's a planned change, like puberty. And just like puberty, we should be educated on what's to come years in advance, rather than the current practice of leaving people on their own with bothersome symptoms and too much conflicting information. Knowing what is happening, why, and what to do about it is both empowering and reassuring.

Frank and funny, Dr. Jen debunks misogynistic attitudes and challenges the
over-mystification of menopause to reveal everything you really need to know about:

- Perimenopause
- Hot flashes
- Sleep disruption
- Sex and libido
- Depression and mood changes
- Skin and hair issues
- Outdated therapies
- Breast health
- Weight and muscle mass
- Health maintenance screening
- And much more!

Filled with practical, reassuring information, this essential guide will revolutionize how women experience menopause--including how their lives can be even better for it!

My Thoughts:

Menopause is a conversation stopper. If you do not believe me, bring it up in conversation and see how fast the subject gets changed or the person suddenly has something else to do. This includes talking to your female friends, very few people want to talk about it. Enter Dr. Jen Gunter. She has written a book that is specifically about menopause, called The Menopause Manifesto: Own Your Health with Facts and Feminism.

"The only thing that is truly predictable about the menopause transition is that it's unpredictable."

Before I read this book I knew what age the ladies in my family go through menopause (42), and that some symptoms are hot flashes and your period gets irregular. That's about it. What do you know about menopause? Hopefully more than me, but even if you do, I imagine it is not enough. If you think that this book does not apply to you because you are in your twenties, thirties, or even your forties, think again! Did you know that decisions you are making RIGHT now can affect you when you enter menopause? No? Neither did I. Did you know that some things that look like menopause could actually be something else? No? Neither did I, but now I do, and hopefully you will as well.

"Women want more information about menopause and that knowledge can reduce suffering."

Dr. Gunter caught my attention in the introduction when she said, "This establishment has temperature control issues. Drenching heat followed by terrible chills. Defies the laws of thermodynamics. Would not recommend." I literally laughed out loud. The doses of humor and the anecdotes that Dr. Gunter uses throughout the book, make what could be a dry subject (no pun intended) an easier read.

"Menopause is puberty in reverse."

Not only does Dr. Gunter cover every symptom of menopause in detail, but she also takes the time to explain where the term came from, and the stigma behind it. She explains, "The culture of silence about menopause in our patriarchal society is something to behold." Dr. Gunter is willing and able to break that silence by explaining what is common with menopause and what needs to be further checked out. She gives clear information on when menopause typically happens, how your body should respond, and if you are earlier or later than the "normal" range of how the body is affected.

"One woman dies every minute from cardiovascular disease."

A few of the things that I learned is that the age of the mother and sisters (if you have any) affect when you will go through menopause. Genetics also plays a role. Menopause also can affect your heart; you start losing muscle mass quicker, and it affects your bone health. Dr. Gunter covers these topics and more in-depth. I was fascinated by all that I did not know and what I could do now to start helping myself. She also talks about different therapy options and so much more.

I would highly recommend this book to any woman who has not gone through menopause yet. Whether you are in the beginning stages or you are far from it, this is a great book to pick up and have on hand for quick reference. It is the most thorough and highly researched book on the subject that I have come across. Even if you are not ready to break the silence about menopause, you can still read this book and become educated on your health.

Thank you to Net Galley and Kensington Press for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review but am more than happy to. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An Unexpected Amish Proposal

 Title: An Unexpected Amish Proposal

Author: Rachel J. Good

Publisher: Kensington Books

Genre: Christian Romance/Amish

Synopsis

Sometimes love is found in the most unexpected places--as three blessed men will discover in Rachel J. Good's heartwarming Amish romance series, set in a bustling Pennsylvania community...

When an organic farm causes rents to skyrocket at the Valley Green Farmer's Market, Fern Blauch's family baked goods stand is driven to the edge of eviction...Until a mysterious temporary reprieve. Fern is confused when she discovers the benefactor is barbecued chicken stand owner--and her longtime crush--Gideon Hartzler. She's grateful, but pridefully tells him she intends to pay him back. If only she can find a new place to sell her wares...

To stay competitive, and help as many others as he can, Gideon expands his stand to provide full meals--including dessert. That's where Fern comes in. As the two work long hours, side-by-side, business booms--and so does their attraction. Still, the demands of caring for aging parents and struggling relatives cause them to hide any feelings beyond friendship. But as new challenges emerge and Gideon and Fern turn more deeply to their faith, and to each other, will love find a place at their table?

My thoughts:

An Unexpected Amish Proposal is the first book in the new series Surprised by Love by Rachel J. Good. I have read other books by Rachel and enjoy her writing style.

Fern loves selling her baked goods at the Valley Green Farmer's Market. She is upset when her rent is increased and she can no longer stay in her booth. She is apprehensive when she decides to switch to organic baked goods to sell at Gideon's stand. Fern is a really sweet character with a heart of gold. She shows wisdom and grace in all her interactions and has a good head on her shoulders. While most people love her, she still manages to get on some people's nerves.

Gideon is running his family's organic BBQ stand at Valley Green Farmer's Market and is drowning in responsibility. That does not stop him from lending a hand to those in need, without thinking through the consequences, adding even more responsibility to his already full plate. Gideon is a somewhat gruff character, with the best of intentions behind his actions. He feels guilt for his brother's death and tries to alleviate that guilt by helping anyone who needs it. While his actions are a bit misguided, his intent is good.

An Unexpected Amish Proposal has quite the motley crew of characters. While there are a lot of characters they are introduced slowly so you get to know them and understand their role in the story. It is very well done. The story is steady, with several surprises mixed in with suspense, making it a quick read. There is a thread of forgiveness woven throughout this story, along with redemption.

I enjoyed this story, from the character development to the well-written plot, everything flowed smoothly. I loved that the Amish worked with Englishers and were even friends with them, which is not something you see in a lot of Amish stories. Usually, there is more separation between them. I could not help but fall in love with several characters and appreciated that they were not all the same age! There is such a wide variety of characters in this story, but each person is unique in their own way. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys light romance written with some Amish and English characters. I would also recommend this to anyone who just wants a good, lighthearted read!

Thank you to Kensington Publishers and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review but was happy to do so. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dreams DO come true!

"Dreams sometimes do come true. But not without something that looks a lot like hard work."         -Sylvia Aston Warner

We all have dreams, some of them are big, some are small, and some seem downright impossible. Some we have talked about for years and others we have kept hidden in our hearts, for fear that if we revealed them out loud, we would jinx ourselves. Do you believe that dreams can come true? I do. What about dreams that you never really thought to ask for? I believe those can come true too. How do I know? Because it happened to me. If you know me at all then you know what my dream job would be......go ahead, guess...I'll wait...Did you say mom? Well, yes, that is and has always been one of my dreams and it came true over 18 years ago. That is not the dream I am referring to here. I said on Facebook sometime last year something to the effect of "I wish I could get paid to read books!" Well, now I am getting paid to read books!!!!! There are several different ways to get "paid" for reading books, I am getting paid in different currencies for different sites. While this might not seem like a big deal to you, it is a VERY big deal for me. I am not getting paid very much money right now, but I am making more money than I was ($0). As a homemaker, and someone who has not had a paying job (lots of nonpaying jobs!) outside of the house in ten years (coincidence that that is the same amount of time I have been homeschooling 🤔?), I sometimes feel guilty that I am not contributing financially to our household. In case anyone is wondering, Matt has NEVER made me feel guilty. But, you can't always help how you feel. When money gets tight and we need things I always start wishing I had a paying job. Since I homeschool and I am needed at home it would have to be something I could do from home. I have looked into a lot of different jobs over the last few jobs, applied for a few, but nothing ever felt right. Then I came across this article from my author friend Sarah Geringer, and at the bottom of the article she talks about how to get more books for free or cheap and I was all over that!!!

What I realized from Sarah's article was that I ALREADY had a Net Galley account, but I had no idea how to use it, I had gotten it when I was on a book launch team in 2016 and hadn't used it since. I did not know you could read books there for free, much less that they were new releases!

Once I got started on Net Galley, I started doing some research to see what else I could find about being a book reviewer. I came across two articles that I found helpful. The first one from Angie Nelson is called "Get Paid to Read books" and the second is from Leisa Good on "How to Become a Paid Book Reviewer." While I have never heard of either of these ladies, I am very thankful to them for sharing their experiences and knowledge....which is what I hope to do in this blog post as well.

So, here are the Companies that I am currently getting "paid" to review books for, along with a brief overview of them:

Net Galley:

I use Net Galley quite a bit. I get free eBooks in exchange for an honest book review. They have a "read now" section on their site that anyone can read from. They also have free previews of new or upcoming books that you can request to read from the publisher. The publisher has the right to decide if you can read their book or not. (I have been declined quite a few times, but have read a lot too 😀) The review only has to be 75 words in length.

Moody Publishers:

To review books for Moody you have to have a blog. They send you a physical book to review and keep. They do not have a length requirement for the review, they only ask that you give an honest review and post on your blog. They start with allowing you one book at a time until you work up your "credits."

Revell:

You also need a blog to review books for Revell. They will send you an email each month and you decide which of their new releases you want to review. They will either send you eBook copies through Net Galley or physical copies in the mail. I have been blessed with both (I will always prefer physical books). Again, you only have to have a 75-word honest review on your blog, then you submit a form back to Revell to show that you have done it.

Reedsy Discovery:

This is an interesting site and you do not have to have a blog to use it. You browse all the available books (all genres) and pick which ones you want to read (up to 3 at a time) and then write a review of 200-400 words depending on the book. Then, the authors have the option of giving you a tip of either $1, $3, or $5 for the review.  I have made a little bit of money in the 6ish weeks that I have used the site (about $25, and more than I was making $0), plus they ran a special promotion in December where you got $10 for each review, up to 10 reviews for an Amazon gift card ($100), which I did and received at the end of January. Not all authors will tip because again, they have the option. Readers can choose to give a tip too (which I thought was weird!). One other ongoing promotion they have is that if you refer someone to them you can get $50 when they write a review and then they get $50 as well. If this interests you click on my promotional link to join: https://reedsy.com/discovery/reviewers/apply?referral=cindy-davis

This has been a fun process for me.  Matt asked if I would be considered a paid reviewer now. I don't think so, I think I would have to be consistently making money and I am not. I do tell him and Elijah they need to give me time to read so I can do my job 😂😂 I have had authors comment on my book reviews on Goodreads and my blog, which has been very exciting to this book nerd!! I also had an author tag me on Facebook and Instagram thanking me for the review, which they are not required to do, but it was sweet. I have been reviewing books on my Goodreads account for several years and Amazon as well, so I am happy to take it to the next level. Even if I never got a free book or compensation in any way, I would continue to review books as I always have because I know how important this is to authors!! If you read books I would encourage you to take a few minutes and leave a review on your favorite book sites, it does not have to be long, at all, it just helps the authors. If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out to me and thanks for helping in any way that you can.

What dreams have come true for you lately? What dreams are you hoping will come true for you? Or what dreams are you currently working toward? Would love to hear from you!!!

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17

(This section new as of 10/8/21)

Ritta reached out to me and told me she thought this article 95+ Blogging Statistics to help you create the best blog in the world would b a great addition to this post, so I am adding it here. Happy reading!

A Dance in Donegal

A Dance in Donegal

Title: A Dance in Donegal

Author: Jennifer Deibel

Publisher: Revell

Genre: Christian Fiction & Historical Fiction

Synopsis:

To fulfill her mother's dying wish, Moira Doherty moves from Boston to the rolling green hills of 1921 Ireland to teach in a village school. She doesn't expect to fall in love--or to uncover a scandalous family reputation her mother left behind years ago.

My Review

When Moira's mother suddenly dies, Moira has a hard time coping and does not want to follow through on her promise to go to Ireland to teach. After agonizing over the decision she finally decides to go. Immediately upon entering Donegal, Moira experiences unexpected harshness before even reaching the guesthouse where she will be staying. Mrs. Martin makes Moira feel welcome and turns into her first friend, even though it is obvious that she is keeping secrets.

Sean is a thatcher and eventually becomes a friend to Moira as well. He wants to help her discover the secrets that the locals in Donegal are keeping from Moira and promises to be her friend no matter what. The people in Donegal are steeped in superstitions and rumors, and it looks like someone has made it a priority to try and scare Moira off. Once all is revealed, will Sean keep his promise to be friends with Moira, no matter what?

A Dance in Donegal is well-written and the plotline flows seamlessly. The descriptions of Ireland are breath-taking and you can hear the Irish brogue in the conversations. When reading the story you get a sense that you are there.

The author, Jennifer Deibel, has threaded powerful lessons of forgiveness and redemption throughout the story. Moria grows to be comfortable with herself, even though many residents of Donegal have made it clear they do not like her. She develops into a brave character, strong in her faith and compassion. While there are occasional light moments in the story, there are some extremely sad ones as well. As a trigger warning, there is a scene where a character is sexually assaulted, it is not extremely graphic, but may be hard for some readers.

I would highly recommend A Dance in Donegal, a debut novel by Jennifer Deibel, to anyone who loves historical fiction. Thank you to Revell and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review, but am happy to do so. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tidewater Bride

Tidewater Bride

 Title: Tidewater Bride

Author: Laura Frantz

Publisher: Revell

Publication Date: January 5, 2021

Genre: Historical Fiction

Synopsis

Selah Hopewell seems to be the only woman in the Virginia colony who has no wish to wed. True, there are too many men and far too few women in James Towne. But Selah already has her hands full assisting her father in the family’s shop. And now she is in charge of an incoming ship of tobacco brides who must be looked after as they sort through their many suitors.

Xander Renick is perhaps the most eligible tobacco lord in the settlement. His lands are vast, his crops are prized, and his position as a mediator between the colonists and the powerful Powhatan nation surrounding them makes him indispensable. But Xander is already wedded to his business and still grieves the loss of his wife, daughter of the Powhatan chief.

Can two fiercely independent people find happiness and fulfillment on their own? Or will they discover that what they’ve been missing in life has been right in front of them all along?

Bestselling and award-winning author Laura Frantz takes you to the salty shores of seventeenth-century Virginia in this exploration of pride, honor, and the restorative power of true love. (taken from Laura Frantz's website)

My Review:

Laura Frantz's Tidewater Bride is the newest release for this Christy Award winner and the ECPA bestselling author of eleven historical novels. Frantz has been writing since she was seven years old and never had a desire to be published, yet here we are. I am thankful that the Lord saw fit to change her plans so that readers could have access to books written from this interesting author.

Tidewater Bride is set in James Towne, Virginia Colony, during the spring of 1634. This is a time of unrest between the colonists and the Powhatan nation, an era when Tobacco was a huge commodity. A time when marriage was more about a business arrangement than about love.

Selah Hopewell is not one of the Tobacco brides, but she is put in charge of them when they come to James Towne. Selah has a hard time understanding the concept of women coming to her town looking for a marriage. Her thoughts are scandalous for the time period as she states, "I would rather marry for love than the price of tobacco." To which her father replies, "Love hardly fills the larder. Marriage is first and foremost a business matter. Affection may come in time, but 'tis clearly secondary to prudence." However, someone catches her eye and changes things for her.

Xander is a tobacco lord, married to his job. His character is surprising as we continue to learn new information about him as the story unfolds. He has had no desire to remarry since his late wife passed. However, as time passes, he warms to the idea of a new bride, the choice is, which one?

This story has many layers. Every time you think you have a grasp on the story, a new detail emerges. At first I was not sure where the story was going, or if I was going to even like it. However, there are many twists and turns in this book. New characters are constantly emerging, changing the dynamics and the drama. There is also an incredible mystery that kept me hanging on the edge of my seat, and made the book impossible to put down.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction, clean romance stories, and stories shrouded in mystery.  With engaging characters, with minds of their own, this book is a good read. This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it will not be my last.

Thank you to Revell for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review, but was happy to do so. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

For those who want more, the author has put together a Pinterest board that brings the novel to life, visually. Laura Frantz says on her website: "You’ll see the inspiration for our heroine, Selah Hopewell, & other characters & scenes from the novel. Imagination is a wonderful thing!"

Active Defense

Active Defense (Danger Never Sleeps, #3)

 Title: Active Defense

Author: Lynette Eason

Series: Danger Never Sleeps #3

Publisher: Revell

Publication Date: January 5, 2021

Synopsis:

As a former field surgeon in Afghanistan, Heather Fontaine is used to life-or-death situations. She just didn't expect them to follow her home. When she returns from a party to find that someone has broken into her house--and threatened her friends--she assumes it is the stalker who has been following her and creeping her out. She hopes to find safety and peace of mind by leaving the city and hiding out in a small town. But trouble has followed her even there.

Luckily, a stalker isn't the only one watching Heather. Travis Walker has been secretly watching out for her for weeks. As owner of his own security agency, it's what he does. Together, Travis and Heather must figure out who wants her dead--and why--before it's too late.

Bestselling and award-winning author Lynette Eason will have you looking over your shoulder as you dive into this fast-paced, suspense-filled story about losing control and finding something even better.

My Review:

While Active Defense  by Lynette Eason is part of a series, it can also be read as a stand alone. I think the reading would be richer for having read the first two books, so you can understand the connections between the friends, but it is not necessary. I thought I had read the first two, but when I went back to see, I realized I had not. Lynette Eason is known for her thrilling suspense novels, and this one exceeded my expectations.

Heather is a surgeon who is stationed in Afghanistan, but quickly ends up back at home after a harrowing event. Once she is home she notices a stalker is following her, but never actually approaches. As she arrives at a party for one of her friends, she notices her stalker and starts after him. However, Travis arrives on the scene and the stalker gets away. During the party Heather downplays the stalker and tells her friends she will reach out if she needs their help.

After the party and Heather has gone home, her friends decide to take matters into their own hands and help Heather without her noticing. They decide Travis will follow her to make sure she stays safe. The only problem is they do not realize that once Heather gets home things are amiss in her house and she runs away. When Travis gets to her house that night he doesn't realize that she is gone.

This story is action packed, from the first chapter to the last. It will take the reader through a lot of twists and turns, with some surprises thrown in. Things are not always as they seem and it was impossible to figure out who the bad guy was. The characters are real and relatable with struggles like anyone else. For Heather it was trust issues from things that she dealt with in her past. This helped her to connect to another with similar circumstances which led to an incredible (and surprising!) scene that really touched my heart. Quite unexpected in a suspense novel, but incredibly well done.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense novels, that literally keep you on the edge of your seat. This book was hard to put down and an easy read. I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out.

Thank you to Revell and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to give a positive review, but was happy to do so. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
