"But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." 1 Peter 3:15

Monemvasia Day 1

We went to Monemvasia on an Embassy planned event. We left the Embassy at noon, on a bus. What should have been a 4 hour trip took about 5. It felt like forever. We liked the idea of not having to drive and pay all the tolls (although we did pay to ride the bus), but in hindsight it would have been nice to not be on a bus that many hours! Also, when it came time to leave on Monday, we were beyond ready to go.
Day one was essentially getting there, exploring our room, a tiny bit of hiking around, grabbing dinner ( We ate dinner at To Kanoni and it was really good) and going to bed. It was extremely windy and cold Friday evening, and we were not really prepared for it. We were expecting it to be in the 50's and sunny, but we had no idea it was going to be with strong gusts of winds. Our room was really chilly too. When Kayla went to take her shower she only had cold water. Matt called the hotel desk and asked about the hot water, if it was on a timer or something. The lady told us the maid must have forgotten to turn the water heater back on!
A short history of Monemvasia: It was founded on a rock off the eastern shore of the Peloponnese in the late sixth century A.D., Monemvasia was populated by the inhabitants of Sparta. It was an important commercial maritime center until 1893 when the Corinth channel opened, with reduced it's maritime traffic. During the Middle Ages, the city was known across Europe for its sweet wine variety, know as "malvasia."
Here are pictures of our room and a tiny bit from our tour on the first night. All pictures from the first day are in the lower city.

View from our window, the Sea and the bell tower.

One of the Churches, right next to our room.

Rock throwing, one of Elijah's favorite pass times.
You can almost see the wind in this picture ;)
